Every landscape is unique, but here’s a seasonal guide to help estimate your weekly watering needs. Constantly adjust based on weather, soil moisture, and plant health.
• Winter (Dec–Feb): around 30 minutes/week
• Spring & Fall (Mar–May / Sept–Nov): around 45 minutes/week
• Early Summer (June): around 1 hour/week
• Peak Summer (July–Aug): 1.5 to 2 hours/week
For example:
• 1 hour/week = 4 cycles of 15 min or 3 cycles of 20 min
Note: Drip systems require 2–3 times the run time of spray heads. For instance, a drip system in Early Summer should run for 2 hours/week.
Spray vs. Drip:
Spray systems cover areas quickly (best for turf/groundcover).
Drip systems deliver water slowly at the roots (ideal for plants/trees) and need longer run times. Check moisture in the soil; water by condition, not just by clock.
Winter Weather & Freezing:
If we experience freezing weather with temperatures expected to remain below 30°F, please be sure to water your existing landscape deeply before the freeze. This helps protect plant roots during extended cold conditions.
Most irrigation systems are equipped with freeze protection, which prevents the system from operating during freezing weather. This is normal and should not be overridden.
If you have a swimming pool, it should also be equipped with freeze protection. During freezing conditions, the system will automatically turn on to keep water moving through the equipment. Please don’t turn the system off. While this may result in ice forming around the pool area, continuous water movement is the safest way to protect the equipment during extreme winter conditions.
